Military Research

One of Michael’s particular areas of expertise is looking into Australian Military records. His two books, The Forgotten Flotilla and Dust & Shadows document particular aspects of the Mediterranean campaigns of 1941. He has also spent many years looking into Australia’s participation during WWI, focussing on the Gallipoli campaign as well as that of the Western Front.

Through the work of Australia’s National Archives (NAA) – most service records for WWI, WWII & other conflicts are available online. The comprehensive databases of the Department of Veteran Affairs can also be accessed (https://nominal-rolls.dva.gov.au/ww2).

Yet, for many participants in campaigns we must look beyond their B103s, their service records for the untold stories. By integrating materials from multiple sources a more complete picture can be constructed. The results may prove to be of not only an individual’s military service but perhaps also their life story

As a starting point you can provide Michael with either an Australian service number or a full name.

Should you require further information, Michael can also carry out investigations for you.  He is able to look into any aspect of Australia’s military heritage should you wish.

Do you have a relative’s wartime diary? Their wartime letters and postcards? Their wartime images? There could well be a book in that memorabilia that now just gathers dust on the shelf or forgotten in a box somewhere.

With a historical framework constructed by some painstaking research, there could easily be a tale to be told. The story would centre around your relative, the main character. Their exploits and sacrifice while in the service could be detailed.

All of these discoveries would then be placed within a more meaningful context adding a great significance to the decisions made by this individual, your relative.
