Dr Michael James Bendon
Michael is a highly experienced archaeologist, researcher & writer. His Doctorate is in Education while he also holds Master's degrees in Linguistics, Maritime Archaeology, Archaeology & History and Cultural Heritage Management. He has worked for over forty years as an archaeologist on sites around the Mediterranean & Europe, including Greece, Israel, Portugal and Germany.
Michael has taken part in underwater excavations with his colleague, Dr Elpida Hadjidakis. Additionally, under Elpida's license and with her assistance Michael continues investigations into a WWII British shipwreck off the coast from the site of ancient Phalasarna in Western Crete.The wreck has proved to have strong ANZAC connections.
Michael is the author of two books, The Forgotten Flotilla and Dust & Shadows as well as academic & general audience articles.
Michae lalso leads tour groups, accompanying groups to Egypt, Turkey, Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Ireland & the Scottish Isles.
Michael started work as an archaeologist in Israel. He then moved on to Portugal before directing excavations on a Medieaval church and cemetery in Northern Germany.
For the last 15 years he has been assisting his colleague, Dr Elpida Hadjidakis, with investigations at Ancient Phalasarna, a large Classical/Hellenistic harbour city in Western Crete.
Michael was awarded honorary citizenship of Kissamos in western Crete. This was given in recognition of his commitment to archaeological work there & the promotion of further ties between the Greek & the Australian communities.
